A new branch railway line just off exiting Volgograd-Moscow link is planned to connect host city Volgograd with Gumrak International Airport (VOG).
Agreement was signed on May 1, 2017 by regional Governor Andrey Bocharov and the head of the regional branch of the Russian Railways Sergey Almeev.
22 pairs of commuter trains will run along the new 1,2-kilometer branch per day, part of trains will run to the southern areas of the city and to neighboring satellite Volzhskiy. With the opening of the intercity bus interchange terminal, a major multimodal transport hub will be set up there.
Local authorities hoping for significant surge of international tourism creating additional load for proposed rail link.
Volgograd one of only a few Russian cities that have to offer something significant to attract interest form abroad as it's famous for unprecedented resistance during the Battle of Stalingrad - often regarded as the largest and bloodiest battle of World War II.
Russia is currently in full-swing preparations for the global football tournaments. The country selected 11 host cities to be the venues for the matches of the 2018 World Cup and they are Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Kazan, Saransk, Kaliningrad, Volgograd, Rostov-on-Don, Nizhny Novgorod, Yekaterinburg and Samara. The FIFA Confederations Cup will be held between June 17 and July 2 in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi and Kazan.
